Arlet's official bio
Arlet are a six-piece contemporary chamber folk ensemble led by accordionist and composer Aidan Shepherd. Their music celebrates the joyful melodicism and rhythmic intensity of British folk, but rather than viewing these traditions as artefacts to be revered, Arlet draw on folk idioms as a point of departure for their carefully sculpted, richly harmonic and ornately textured music. They have released two EPs and the album ‘Clearing’ on Smugglers Records, and their second album ‘Big Red Sun’ will be released in early 2016.
Loosely based in East Kent, the band has a close relationship with Smugglers, frequently playing at their events and festivals and collaborating with Cocos Lovers. They occasionally tour more widely, taking in festivals such as Cambridge Folk, Shambala and Purbeck Valley as well as smaller venues. Epitomising a small orchestra, they are most at home giving intimate acoustic performances in unusual spaces – namely woods, boats, historic buildings and evening the occasional roundabout…
