As well as being a full time musician with the multi-tentacled psych-folk behemoth Sons of Noel and Adrian and getting crowds dancing to the rowdy stamp-along anthems of The Mariner’s Children, she has found time to lend her voice, clarinet or accordion skills to everyone from Laura Marling to Broken Social Scene.

Edinburgh based roots collective with a gloriously upbeat and stirringly melancholic mix of bluegrass, gospel, country, folk and pop.

Formed by Belfast born five-string banjo player Pat McGarvey in 2006 and taking their name from the groundbreaking multi-racial union of sharecroppers and non-landowning tenant farmers founded in Arkansas in the 1930s (the Southern Tenant Farmers’ Union), the Edinburgh-based Southern Tenant Folk Union are now the most highly rated folk and bluegrass outfit in the UK today.

Now with their fourth album they’ve continued to appropriate themes and ancient sounding chord progressions from traditional folk songs. Using these to document and reflect modern life they keep the essential simplicity and directness of style but often with a modern update to the underlying lyrical subject matter.

– Voice, Rhodes, concertina, re-tuned harmonicas

Coming from a family of English folk singers, Seamus Cater carries the torch from a contemporary perspective. Having spent twelve years as a member of the eclectic Amsterdam music scene and four years previously in Manchester, he injects new subject matter, arrangement and orchestration to these traditional roots. His songwriting draws directly from the the likes of Ewan MacColl and Peter Bellamy and collides their styles with modern literatary sources. Cater’s particular technique of harmonica playing in his duo with NYC avant banjoist Woody Sullender was receivied with universal glowing press in 2010; that album, ‘When We Get to Meeting’ (Dead CEO), opened the debate as to what a simple banjo-harmonica duo could sound like.

Viljam Nybacka

- Drums, voice, ukulele, guitar, percussion

Born in a small town in Finland and brought up in a vibrant atmosphere of many musical influences, Viljam Nybacka’s musical development progressed through classical and electric guitar. He moved to Amsterdam to study electric bass and soon became a member of the highly esteemed N-Collective. From Amsterdam, he toured extensively as the bassist of Brown vs Brown, a freejazz/mathrock outfit that released two albums, the latter on the American label Cuneiform. He started playing drums especially for this project, at once demonstrating a deep musical affinity for anything he touches, exploring unique drumming approaches within his multi-instrumental practice. Nybacka also works as guitarist and singer in the band Jæ (Hubro Records).

Stuart Silver is co-founder of the Perrier Award winning, Bafta nominated multimedia comedic performance group nobleandsilver. He created the widely acclaimed monologue-with bluegrass-ukulele ‘You Look Like Ants’, and ‘what we should have said’, an original international spoken word and music event.

Tricity Vogue
Charming, offbeat musical cabaret from a vintage songstress with a repertoire of surprising tunes and a colourful history of romantic misadventure.
Tricity Vogue presents her own blend of slink and sass – the music she likes to call “cheeky jazz”. Think Peggy Lee after a few too many cocktails.
