You’re invited to join in the Campfire Club! In time-honoured fashion we will gather around roaring blazes enveloped in music and entertainment. High spirits will be maintained with good ol’ sing-a-longs, storytelling, special guests and who knows what else. Every fire will be a unique event with a magic concoction of spontaneity, rare talents and the unknown, all drenched in the sepia tones of firelight and tinged with wooded aromas.
Rattled by the bones of convicts and steeped in campfire smoke, Bush Gothic perform darker, stranger Australian folk. Defiantly modern, achingly old, this most daring of Australian bush bands perform songs of criminal women and desperate men from an era of transportation, adventure and gold. The Guardian described band leader Jenny M. Thomas as an ‘Edgy rising folk star’ and together with double bassist Dan Witton and drummer Chris Lewis they are touring the UK to celebrate the release of their new album The Natural Selection Australian Songbook. Live concerts in Australian gaols, concert halls and goldfields have been reviewed as ‘outstanding’ and ‘mesmerising…utterly riveting’. All three members of the band have toured the world with a long list of internationally acclaimed music and theatre ensembles including Circus Oz and The Australian Opera but this is the first time they bring Bush Gothic to England. ‘Imagining life without her music and its surprises is too bleak to even think about. Jenny M. Thomas is that transformative an artist.’ (fRoots) ‘If I get three musical discoveries of this calibre out of the hundreds of new musical experiences that come my way annually, I count myself blessed.’ (JAZZWISE) ‘Bold, inspired and beautiful in its intensity, Thomas, plus two, have taken the foundations of a folk library and built a new architecture. Bush Gothic takes your breath away.’ (The National Times).
Also joined by Rachel Johnston on cello: Educated at The Julliard School New York Rachel has performed with the Australian String Quartet and now maintains a diverse calendar of commitments as an international soloist. In London to perform with Eska she will join Bush Gothic at the campfire to complete a bush string section of violin, double bass and violin.
**Please Note: The concerts are all outside and all weather affairs thus full waterproofs are highly recommended and warm clothes.
