Heralded by The Recorder Magazine as a “folk recorder pioneer”, Finn Collinson has rapidly been gaining a reputation as one of the foremost exponents of his instrument on the English folk scene, performing at major folk clubs, venues and festivals including The Sidmouth Folk Festival, Broadstairs Folk Week and FolkEast, and being shortlisted for the BBC Young Folk Award in 2018. His critically-acclaimed solo debut Call To Mind, released in 2019, was described by FATEA as “a work of true quality”.
Finn’s performances feature instrumental tunes and songs, both self-composed and traditional in origin, all tied together with fascinating stories of his instruments and music. Drawing on material dating back to the 17th Century and earlier, Finn’s music is a real meeting point of old and new, and often relates back to his East Anglian roots. As The Living Tradition observes, “the kinship between music and place is strongly present throughout much of Finn’s music”. Touring primarily with The Finn Collinson Band, but also entirely solo, he continues to develop new music in the contemporary folk style, alongside collaborators for 2022 Emma Beach, Evan Carson and Archie Churchill-Moss.
Aside from his solo work, Finn performs with award-winning recorder quartet Aurai and London-based ceilidh band Stroma. He is also in high demand as a folk educator, notably as the co-ordinator of the Youth Moot education programme for FolkEast in Suffolk. Finn is a graduate of the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.
With music that will inspire you to dance in the aisles and pause for reflection, a performance with Finn Collinson is sure to enthral with its musical energy and diversity.
