Join us this March for a limited series of special live shows for Grand Junction’s Comfort and Courage season.
Following his Jazz Takeover as part of the London Jazz Festival in Autumn 2020, we’ve got Abel Selaocoe, the boundary-crossing South African cellist headlines the second night, and Modeste Hugues, celebrated for his blend of traditional Malagasy sounds.
Abel Selaocoe
South African cellist Abel Selaocoe is redefining the parameters of the cello. He moves seamlessly across a plethora of genres and styles, from collaborations with world musicians and beatboxers, to concerto performances and solo classical recitals. Abel combines virtuosic performance with improvisation, singing and body percussion, and has a special interest in curating recital programmes that highlight the links between Western and non-Western musical traditions, with a view to helping classical music reach a more diverse audience.
Modeste Hugues
Modeste Hugues, an award-winning singer songwriter and guitarist from Madagascar, is celebrated for his unique blend of traditional Malagasy sounds. His incredible live performances reveal memorable melodies and rhythms with hypnotic guitar and vocals.
Growing up in southern Madagascar, he built his own guitar, and loved to recreate the sound of village life (especially the marovany, a 24-stringed traditional instrument) and this developed into using Betrokan rhythms with the sounds of the bush. This reminiscent pallet is what he draws on when playing, and is the place that he returns to when performing.
20% of every streaming ticket sale will go towards our chosen charity for this event, Friends of the Earth.
