LUHANGAH

Luhangah, a.k.a. Street Rat is a Malawian singer, songwriter, band leader and cultural proponent, now residing in Edinburgh. Originally hailing from the northern Malawi city of Mzuzu, where he was a central figure in the music landscape, and founded prominent Arfo-jazz and reggae bands such as Souls of the Ghetto and Body, Mind & Soul.

Nowadays he often performs as a solo artist, his tunes sung in several different Malawian languages, such as Nkhonde and Chitumbuka, delving into social, political and spiritual topics. His dynamic and evocative singing rides on top of the ear catching afro rhythms of his unique guitar style.

Since moving to Scotland, Luhangah is also pursuing an academic path alongside his music, with a BSc (Hons) focusing on the legacy of colonialism in African education systems.
