Ruby Colley is a violinist and composer. She creates instrumental soundscapes that are far beyond the realm of traditional playing, with the complex web of sound more akin to an electric orchestra. She draws upon many different styles such as Folk, Jazz and Classical.
Her own work has always been inspired by nature and the natural rhythms/patterns found within it. Ruby’s debut album Murmurations, released in February 2010, presents a selection of pieces inspired by nature and natural forms. Her interests have developed into building a relationship between the audible world around us and creative practice.
In January 2020, Ruby was awarded funding from Arts Council England to Develop her Creative Practice. The film ‘The Sea Wrote It’ was part of the Alt Pitch Arts & technology Festival (march 2021), and won their artist commission award. It is part of wider project “Overheard’ which seeks to unravel the connections between and within nature, sound and audiences through original compositions that blend field recordings, and instrumentation. As humans, we have traditionally looked to folk music to document our lives, but also our relationship with the world around us.
Through the lens of Lockdown, our relationship with nature has shifted, many of us noticing the sounds around us more. Ruby’s work embraces the many ways that traditions, technology and nature are currently intertwining today, whilst sitting in the space and stillness that lockdown has brought about.
The work generated over the past year will be part of her new Album ‘Overheard’, due for release in Spring 2022.
Ruby has written for Film, and collaborated with Theatre and Dance, and played with acts such as Owen Pallette, Sinead O’Connor, The Unthanks, Hawk and a Hacksaw, Zoe Keating and the late John Martyn. She was artists in residence for the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Belfast, (2008) and also performed the Acoustic Stage at Glastonbury (2011) with the esteemed Isobel Anderson. Her most recent film collaboration with Dance United has been accepted into the Fastnet Film Festival and Encounters Film Festival.
Ruby’s track The Wait, was used for the film “We all have a tree in us” by the Turner nominated Project Artworks. It was scheduled to be shown at the British Film Institute (BFI) on 21 April 2020.
Ruby is part of The Nest Collective’s Amplify artist development programme in 2021.
