URSA MAJOR

Ursa Major came together as part of the Making Tracks Residency in 2024. Made up of Shohret Nur (Dutar/Rawap), Anna McLuckie (Clàrsach/Voice), Nina Harries (Double Bass/Voice) and Christian Mohr-Levisen (Hurdy Gurdy), their music is an eclectic mix of their musical traditions; Uyghur pop and folk, Scottish folk, Western and Indian classical music and Scandinavian folk music.

The name Ursa Major came out of a feverish search for a name that could encompass the breadth of their musical traditions and cultures. Otherwise known as The Plough, the shape of this well known constellation could be overlaid on the world map to connect their countries of origin to eachother. But it also showed them something greater, that zooming out into the Exosphere, things like borders and countries no longer matter, and sharing music under the stars is what connects us all.
